Canadian country - blues outfit the Sumner Brothers are without doubt a relic from past times! Inspired by freak shows, carnies and medicine shows from the dustbowl era, their music is best described as foot stompin, rockin, rustic-roots, country, folk and blues. Although expressing no interest in any particular religion their music deals often with the spiritual side of live. Reminiscing the gospel sounds of Johnny Cash or the Appalachian folk sounds of Sixteen Horsepower these brothers are a rising name for sure in their native British Columbia. Straight from the heart and touching the soul, the brothers Bob & Brian write their own tracks and occasional take on a cover version from people like Cash, Bob Dylan or the Carter Family. “Folsom Prison Blues” is a nice rendition of the original and is without doubt the most up-tempo tune of the complete album. The self penned tunes like “Going Out west”, “My words” & “We aint going back this time” are real ear-catchers and instant favorites. All of them however comes with a distinct air of craftsmanship and feels like dealing with seasoned musicians who’ve seen their share of trouble, misery and failure. Nothing is less true the both Brian and Bob are in their mid twenties but seems to know what they are doing for sure. Taking on a style reminiscent to the early days, this twenty some duo plays real laid-back country-blues & folk with a lot of twang and flair. Mixing live tracks and studio-recorded songs “In the garage” is a truly interesting album full of enigmatic tunes!
